President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on citizens to demonstrate their commitment to the nation through both words and actions, urging them to uphold respect and national unity.
Speaking at a press briefing at the President’s Office, President Muizzu outlined the government’s new National Respect Initiative, aimed at promoting a culture of mutual respect across Maldivian society.
The initiative was approved by the Cabinet at its meeting and is expected to be implemented across all inhabited islands of the Maldives.
President Muizzu said the initiative should be viewed as a national effort that transcends political differences. He expressed concern that opposition parties had discouraged their members from accepting invitations to take part in the initiative’s launch.
He called on political parties to set aside political differences when dealing with matters of national interest and to support efforts aimed at improving the wellbeing of the country.
The president also urged members of the public to take part in the initiative, saying collective responsibility was essential to strengthening respect and national values.
During the briefing, President Muizzu also highlighted government plans to mark the 900th anniversary of the Maldives’ embrace of Islam.
As part of the commemorations, the government plans to install boards featuring Islamic reminders and *dhikr* along the main roads of every inhabited island in the country.
