Expatriate Detention Centre to be opened early next year

Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail has revealed the development of the expatriate detention centre is expected to be completed and brought into operation within the next two months.

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), is currently conducting a project to repair and renovate the detention facility established in Hulhumale’. The Maldives is faced with an increasing amount of major social and economic issues due to the rising number of illegal expatriates in the country. As part of the regularisation project, Maldives Immigration has documented 13,000 expatriates and allowed them to return to work.

Ministry of Economic Development, Maldives Immigration, and other relevant agencies are working together to make arrangements for the repatriation of expatriates. In efforts to facilitate the project, the government is working to bring the new detention centre into operation early next year in line with international standards.
