Gov't launches national plan to eradicate AIDS and Hepatitis

The government of the Maldives has launched a national strategic plan to eradicate Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis, and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) by 2030. The five-year plan was launched at a ceremony held as part of the AIDS Day celebrations in Villingili, Gaafu Alifu Atoll.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem said the plan aims to eradicate AIDS, Hepatitis, and other STIs from the Maldives by 2030. He said the most important step is to raise public awareness and avoid unwanted lifestyle habits. Additionally, Minister Naseem said that the treatment system for such diseases has already been expanded in the Maldives. He said that tests can be done for most diseases in health centres and hospitals from the first quarter of next year and Hepatitis testing will also be made available in different parts of the country. He also said that the individuals suffering from such diseases are getting necessary medical treatment through Aasandha Company Limited and State Trading Organisation (STO).

Also speaking at the ceremony, Director General of Health Protection Agency (HPA) Maimoona Aboobakuru said that such diseases are likely to spread in the Maldives. However, she said that they can be eradicated and that early testing and treatment is the most important step. She added the health ministry will strengthen the testing system across the country and raise public awareness.

Moreover, a family evening was also held in Villingili following the launching ceremony. The evening provided information on ways to stay healthy and shape lives for individuals of all ages and also provided games for the children.
