Foreign gov’t colleges allowed to establish campuses in Maldives

Ministry of Higher Education has allowed foreign government colleges and universities to establish campuses in the Maldives.

The higher education ministry published an amendment to the regulations on registering foreign higher education centres, which states that the government is allowed to grant permission for foreign government-affiliated higher education centres to establish campuses in the Maldives. It states that the government needs to be of a country with established diplomatic relations with the Maldives and the centre is banned from requiring Maldivian students to make payments or pay fees.

The regulations also state that the centre can only hold programmes that are recognised by the Maldives Qualification Authority (MQA) and approved by the higher education ministry, and certificates can only be given out by the centre’s main administration.
