Gov't launches project to develop 100 housing unit in Gan

The government has launched the construction of 100 housing units in Gan, Laamu Atoll.

The foundation of the housing units was laid by Minister of State for National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Akram Kamaluddin, Parliamentarian Mohamed Wisam, and the members of the Gan Island Council.

SJ Construction Private Limited was awarded the project in May to build 100 housing units in Gan as part of the government's efforts to solve the housing problem faced by the growing population in Gan. The scope of the project includes developing 100 three-bedroom units in Gan, each with an area of 1,000 sqft. Each unit will include three bathrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, laundry, and a storeroom.

SJ Construction transported the heavy vehicles and other equipment needed for the project to the island in July. The project also includes the establishment of some public services for the area where the housing units will be built. These include the installation of street lights and a vehicle parking area. The agreement also includes the construction of a park to provide a comfortable environment for families moving into the housing units.

The project was contracted to SJ Construction at a price of USD5.4 million, which is to be spent under the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP). The project is expected to be completed within one year.

Gan is one of the most populous islands in the Maldives. The registered population of Gan is more than 4,800 people.
