MTCC to build harbours in Velidhoo, Lhohi and shore protection in Dhevvadhoo

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been contracted to build harbours in Velidhoo and Lhohi in Noonu Atoll and shore protection structures in Dhevvadhoo, Gaafu Alifu Atoll.

The agreements were signed by the General Manager of MTCC Shifau Ali and the Director General of the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Fathimath Shaana Farooq.

As per the agreement, MTCC is required to develop the harbour in Velidhoo within 500 days at a cost of USD3.3 million. The state-owned company will be dredging 67,020cbm of the existing harbour and 19,500cbm for the extension, and 2,414cbm of the channel. It will also build a 12m breakwater, 151m revetment, 167m inner wall, and install 10 mooring buoys. Other works include building a 121sqm apron and a 120m concrete jetty, installing two navigation lights, and 22 street lights.

Meanwhile, MTCC is required to develop the harbour in Lhohi within 640 days at a cost of USD4.4 million. The state-owned company will be dredging 66,701cbm of the harbour and 2,205cbm of the channel. It will also build a 281m breakwater, 95m revetment and 366m wall, and install 10 mooring buoys. Other works include building a 121m ramp, a concrete jetty, two navigation lights, and 19 street lights.

Additionally, MTCC is required to build shore protection structures in Dhevvadhoo within 210 days at a cost of USD1.6 million. As part of the project, the company will build a 120m revetment to cover the north, east, and southern shores of the island which are being eroded. A 400m groyne will also be built and the company will also refill the beach with sand.
