MTCC inaugurates Alifushi Airport terminal development project

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has inaugurated the development of the airport terminal in Alifushi, Raa Atoll.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Adam Azim held the groundbreaking ceremony in Alifushi with Parliamentarian Mohamed Rasheed Hussain and President of Alifushi Island Council Adam Imran in attendance.

MTCC was awarded the contract for the development of Alifushi Airport in September 2021. MTCC has begun the construction of the structures of the airport following the completion of the reclamation of land. MTCC stated that 50 hectares of land will be used for the airport area and 10 hectares will be used for housing and economic activities on the island. The construction of the fire building and shuttering and bar banding of the fire pond are currently underway.

The scope of the project involves reclamation operations of 50.5 hectares, construction of a 2,871m revetment, a 480m groyne, as well as the construction of a 1,500m runway, apron, taxiway, and service roads, terminal building, fire building, installation of firefighting equipment and a 655m security fence. It also includes coastal protection of the airport development area. The project was contracted to be completed within two years at a cost of over USD30 million.

Alifushi has a population of 3,000 residents and is located far away from other islands as well as Ifuru Airport in Raa Atoll. Alifushi Airport will be the second airport to be developed in Raa Atoll.
