Health Protection Agency (HPA) has urged the public to be cautious over the increase in cases of pink eye. HPA stated that individuals should get the latest information on pink eye and take preventive measures.
Pink eye (conjunctivitis) is an inflammation of the membrane that lines the eyelid and eyeball. It is most often caused by a viral infection and can also be caused by a bacterial infection or an allergic reaction. The symptoms of pink eye include redness or itchiness in the eyes or a discharge that forms a crust during the night that prevents the eyes from opening in the morning. Individuals showing signs of pink eye should consult a doctor immediately.
Pink eye is contagious and individuals can reduce the risk of contracting pink eye by regularly washing their hands and places where they regularly touch, avoiding touching their eyes, and discarding used tissues.
