Auction shop no longer allowed to operate at site of fire incident

Male’ City Council has decided to not permit the secondhand auction shop to re-open at the site of the fire incident in Male’ City.

It took authorities three hours to quell the fire on January 9 and the auction shop burned down completely during the incident. The shop had a large number of wood and furniture for sale. The nearby accommodation block of the Male’ City Council had also burned down and 202 workers have been transferred to a temporary shelter.

At a council meeting, the Mayor of Male’ City Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that allowing the auction shop to re-open at the site is not an option and that an area can be allocated at the industrial village in Male’ or Hulhumale’. He noted the importance of having second-hand markets for residents to cheaply purchase products and said those places should be easily within reach.

The Male’ City Council voted for Mayor Muizzu’s proposal to request the government to not allow the auction shop to re-open at the site.
