Maldives receives USD63 million as Green Tax in 2022

The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has revealed that it received more than USD63 million as Green Tax in 2022, which is a significant increase compared to 2021.

According to statistics, MIRA collected USD63 million as Green Tax in 2022 which makes up 4.4% of the revenue collected last year. In 2021, MIRA collected USD52 million as Green Tax which is USD11 million less than in 2022, according to the statistics.

The government is spending the revenue from the Green Tax on various environmental projects across the country. These projects include establishing water and sewerage facilities, beach protection, and clean environment projects.

In addition, the statistics published by the Ministry of Finance revealed the atolls that generated the largest sums of Green Tax are Kaafu Atoll, Alifu Alifu Atoll, Raa Atoll, and Alifu Dhaalu Atoll.

The Green Fund was introduced in 2016 with the aim of tackling environmental issues in the Maldives as per the Tourism Act of the Maldives. As such, USD6 is charged as Green Tax per tourist for each day they spend at a resort or a hotel in the Maldives, while USD3 is charged as Green Tax per tourist for each day they stay at a guesthouse.
