Import of food products with misleading labels to be banned

The Maldives Food and Drugs Authority (MFDA) has revealed that businesses will be banned from importing food products with misleading labels from February 15.

MFDA stated that the number of products with inaccurate labels on packets and containers is increasing. It noted that products including biscuits are being imported in containers with labels of other products, while some containers have easily removable labels.

MFDA stated that consumers might be misled by these types of products and that investigations of any reports or complaints will be hindered due to the inability of relevant authorities and businesses to trace the origin of the products. It highlighted that placing inaccurate labels violates the relevant regulations and urged businesses to import products that are sealed inside containers with accurate labels.
