The Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage, Heena Waleed, has said that becoming well-rounded individuals depends on how people apply their knowledge and skills.
The Minister made the remarks while speaking to participants at the opening ceremonies of the speaking competition held in Addu City in memory of Addu Bodufandiyaaru Thakurufaanu, and the debate competition held in memory of Al-Sheikh Hussain Sharafudheen. Both competitions are being organised by the Student Union of the Maldives National University.
Minister Heena said such competitions help students develop qualities that are essential for becoming well-rounded individuals, while also teaching them to maintain self-confidence. She said the competitions encourage students to embrace values such as honesty, seek accurate information and develop an appreciation for knowledge-based discussions. Such initiatives, she added, contribute to a brighter future for the country and help nurture well-rounded Maldivian citizens.
The Minister said these competitions are educational initiatives aimed at developing well-rounded individuals among future generations. She said they teach students to exchange differing views respectfully, listen to others without prejudice and interact with one another based on ethical standards and principles.
Highlighting the important considerations involved in preparing children for an ever-changing world, Minister Heena said particular attention must be given to developing generations capable of engaging with others through creative ideas and critical thinking.
She said that although the ways in which people live continue to change alongside modern technology, teaching children how to deal with differences remains particularly important in today's society. While quality education and professional skills are essential foundations, the Minister noted that knowledge and skills alone cannot be considered complete if individuals lack the ability to express their own views.
The speech and debate competitions being held in Addu City are being conducted by the Student Union of the Maldives National University in collaboration with the university's Hithadhoo Campus, the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage, the Addu City Council and the Dhivehi Language Academy. The competitions are being held for schools and institutions in Addu City and Fuvahmulah City.
