Home Minister reaffirms current administration is not vindictive

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla has stated that the current administration is not vindictive. He made the remark in a tweet following a meeting between former President Abdulla Yameen and other leaders of the opposition coalition.

The meeting was held in Maafushi Prison, where former President Yameen is serving an 11-year prison sentence. Responding to a message by an opposition coalition member on Twitter, Minister Imran said that the fact the meeting was allowed to take place shows the integrity of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, adding that his administration is not one to be vindictive.

Numerous politicians were jailed during the administration of President Yameen and they had reported being obstructed of their right to family visits. Minister Imran heavily criticised the actions of the previous administration during his time in prison.

The Criminal Court of the Maldives sentenced former President Yameen to 11 years in prison in December after finding him guilty of money laundering and accepting bribes in relation to the lease of Aarah, Vaavu Atoll, for resort development through Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).
