President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the government’s commitment to carrying out infrastructure development projects without interruption is evident from the progress being made on the ThilaMale' Bridge.
The President made the remarks in an interview with the media while observing the ongoing work on the ThilaMale’ Bridge, which connects Male' and Vilimale'.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said that when the current administration assumed office, work on numerous infrastructure development projects across the Maldives had been halted. He noted that one of the government’s top priorities upon taking office was to accelerate these projects, and highlighted those that have since been completed.
“We worked to accelerate the projects after assuming office. As a result, work on several important projects that had been stalled has now been completed. These include the new terminal at Velana International Airport and the works at Hanimaadhoo Airport,” the President said.
The President said that when the government assumed office, progress on the ThilaMale’ Bridge was not moving at a particularly fast pace. However, he said important efforts had been made in cooperation with the Government of India to accelerate the project. He also expressed his gratitude to the Indian Government, the Indian High Commissioner and the Minister responsible for construction for their support in this regard.
President Muizzu said the project’s contractor, Afcons, is currently carrying out the bridge works at an accelerated pace, and that the bridge has now been fully connected. He added that the target is to complete all remaining works on the bridge within a year.
The President also highlighted the longstanding ties between the Maldives and India. He said India is an important partner in the Maldives’ infrastructure development, and described the ThilaMale’ Bridge as an important project symbolising the close relationship between the two countries.
