Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has revealed that efforts are underway for the development of the fishermen's harbour in Mulah, Meemu Atoll adding the harbour will be completed in three months.
MTCC was awarded the contract on February 11, 2021 to develop a fishermen's harbour in the atoll. The practical work began in April of that year. Although the work was delayed for various reasons, the development of the port is now underway at a fast pace.
Speaking on the development of the fishermen's harbour in Mulah, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim said among the projects carried out by the government, projects specialised for fishermen are prioritised. As such, he said that harbours for fishermen are already being developed in different parts of the country adding harbour development project in Mulah will be completed within the next three months.
The scope of the project includes the dredging of the land and the establishment of the harbour. The 160m harbour is being developed at a cost of USD3.6 million. In addition, 68.90 acres of revetment and construction of 3,200 acres of pavement.
One of the biggest complaints of the fishermen is that they have to throw away fish that they cannot process. Fishermen are also facing difficulties due to lack of harbours, especially in atolls where fishing is prominent. Therefore, the development of the fishermen's harbour in Mulah is a project that is connected to the hopes of the fishermen of the island as well as the fishermen of the atoll.
