Pfizer vaccine to be administered for children between 5-11

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has opened to administer the Pfizer vaccine for children between the ages of 5-11 years.

HPA stated the Pfizer vaccine will be available at vaccination centres in the Greater Male' Region, and hospitals and health centres in the atolls. HPA said the Maldives Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (MTAGI) recommended that the vaccine be approved for children aged 5-11 years. In addition, the Pfizer vaccine will be available to children over the age of 12. HPA also said that individuals who have not completed the COVID-19 vaccine doses are advised to get vaccinated.

In August 2022, the United States (US) government donated more than 99,000 doses of the vaccine. These include Moderna as well as the Pfizer vaccine. A total of 399,178 individuals have completed the first dose of the vaccine so far. The second dose was given to 385,099 individuals while the first dose of the booster was given to 167,635 individuals. In addition, a second dose of the booster has been given to 1.523 individuals, including individuals over the age of 12 years.
