Water supply system in Hangnaameedhoo inaugurated

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has inaugurated the water supply system in Hangnaameedhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll.

At a special ceremony in Hangnaameedhoo, Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Latheef inaugurated the water supply system. Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure contracted STELCO to provide the service to Hangnaameedhoo. The company stated that the water supply system has been connected to 170 households and that the first tonne of water will be provided free of charge to each household.

The planning ministry contracted MWSC to develop the water supply system in 2019. However, the company commenced the project in 2021 after delays in procuring the equipment and resources during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Hangnaameedhoo Island Council stated that the development of the water supply system aimed to solve the challenges faced by residents due to the damaged water table and pave the way for the development of the local guesthouse businesses.

As part of the project, MWSC built a 6km water supply network, a building with two reverse osmosis (RO) plants, and three water storage containers. The company brought in the purification system and the generator sets to power the system. The cost of the project was USD1.4 million.
