Water storage tanks installed in Kamadhoo

Male' Water and Sewerage Company Private Limited (MWSC) has completed the installation of water storage tanks under the water and sewerage development project in Kamadhoo, Baa Atoll.

The company aims to continue efforts at a fast pace and complete the project by the middle of the year. Under the project, 200sqm water storage tanks were installed and the installation of a 520sqm rainwater storage tank has also been completed. In addition, the construction of the main pipe for water and sewerage has been completed as part of the project.

President of Kamadhoo Island Council Hassan Zareer said that the sewerage pipes have been installed in households, while water connections have not been completed yet. In addition, a borehole for groundwater extraction has also been completed. He said the development of the reverse osmosis building is currently underway. He said the construction of the pump stations has not started due to the contractor not arriving on the island. He also said that a 4,387km water network with a capacity of 25,000 tonnes per day will be established to supply water to the island.

The Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure awarded the project to MWSC on December 14, 2021. The project is scheduled to be completed in 540 days at a cost of USD3.6 million. The project was scheduled to be completed in 2022 but was delayed due to a lack of imported equipment.

The water and sewerage system is the most important basic service needed on the island. The residents have always been concerned about the pollution of the water and the loss of toilet junctions.

In addition to Kamadhoo, the government has started work to establish the service on 11 islands in Baa Atoll.
