AgroNat conducts trials for new varieties of seeds

Agro National Corporation (AgroNat) has announced it is testing a variety of seeds for vegetables and fruits that can be grown in the Maldives.

AgroNat is conducting extensive trials for new varieties of seeds in Gaadhoo, Laamu Atoll. Agronet is testing the seedlings in Gaadhoo and supplying them to farmers. Recently, a new variety of watermelon was grown by a farmer in Hoandeddhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, using a different variety of seeds.

Managing Director Haroon Rasheed said AgroNat is bringing in a variety of seeds to the Maldives. He said these seeds are imported from different countries. In addition, he said AgroNat is now focusing on launching new varieties of papayas and watermelons. He also said AgroNat aims to see these products in the local market in the future.

AgroNat was established by the government in 2020 to market agricultural produce from local farms and provide a better income for farmers by providing technical and financial assistance and helping them market their produce. AgroNat has established contracts with farmers to produce 17 different types of fruits and vegetables.
