The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has revealed that canned fish exports increased by 13.5% in January compared to the same month last year.
Statistics published by MMA show that the Maldives exported 1,015MT of canned fish products in January, which is an increase of 13.5% compared to the 894MT exported in January 2022 or any other month of that year. In 2022, the Maldives exported the highest number of canned fish products in May with 928MT, and in 2021 exported the highest amount in December with 1,100MT.
However, the number of overall fish exports has decreased. As such, 8,576MT of fish products were exported in January, which is a 14.6% decrease compared to the 10,044MT of fish exports in January 2022. The statistics reveal that the decrease is a result of the decline in the export of frozen fish products. As such, 7,360MT of frozen fish products were exported in January this year, which is a 17% decrease compared to the 8,889MT of frozen fish exported in January 2022.
Additionally, the statistics show that fish processing companies purchased 8,939MT of fish in January, which is a 1.5% increase compared to the 8,802MT of fish purchased in the same month last year. The price of a kilogram of yellowfin tuna has increased to USD4.
