School principals can better students’ education: Gov’t

Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Ali has stated that school principals have the authority to better the education of students. She made the remark at the ceremony held to present the letters of appointment to principals of the first batch of the Principals' Scholarship Scheme.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Aishath said that the newly appointed school principals have been given huge responsibilities. She said the job comes with many challenges but that they will receive a long-lasting sense of fulfillment if they are able to live up to their responsibilities. She noted that principals have a duty to manage the administration of schools in order for teachers to provide an education to their students to the best of their abilities.

Additionally, Minister Aishath highlighted the importance of principals having the ability to meet and discuss issues with parents, teachers, students, and members of the community. She also said that principals should be patient during hard times and think before taking any measures. She added that they should prioritise the good of their school ahead of anything else.

At the ceremony, Vice President Naseem presented letters of appointment to 17 principals who had completed the Principals' Scholarship Scheme. The administration launched the programme in 2022 to address the shortage of trained local principals and ensure the continuous professional development of principals leading schools across the country.

The second batch of the three-year scholarship scheme will commence their Masters of Educational Management programme this year. The programme seeks to train local principals to lead government-run schools nationwide.
