Ghaazee Building to be replaced with parking zone

The government has decided to demolish the Ghaazee Building and replace it with a parking zone.

Speaking to PSM News, Minister of State for National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Akram Kamaluddeen said that the building, which houses government offices, is in a deteriorated condition and not safe for use. He said the government aims to demolish the building and replace it with a parking zone as soon as possible.

Ghaazee Building was opened in 1982 during the administration of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, in memory of Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam who overthrew the Portuguese occupation in 1573. The building was constructed to provide a centralised location for various government offices to operate under one roof.

The building consists of four floors with 12,800sqft of space each and has housed government offices for 41 years. Currently, the Auditor General’s Office (AGO) and the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) are located at the building.
