Male’ Water and Sewerage Company Private Limited (MWSC) has stated that preparations to upgrade the water and sewerage system are currently underway in Maafushi, Kaafu Atoll.
Speaking at a press conference to share information on the Maafushi sewerage upgradation project, Managing Director Hassan Shah said he visited Maafushi and discussed issues with the residents regarding the water and sewerage system on the island. He said the residents of the island are in need of a well-established water and sewerage system as the population of the island increases and more households are being constructed. He also said that the increased number of households and guesthouses has put pressure on the old sewerage system on the island.
Additionally, Shah said the water and sewerage system problem in Maafushi has come to the attention of the government and MWSC and the necessary work is currently being done. As such, he said financial and other preparations are being made to resolve the issue. In addition, he said that separate sewage disposal work is being carried out in Maafushi Prison, adding that attention should also be paid to the disposal of sewerage in the area. The sewerage work in Maafushi will be done with attention to that as well.
The first sewerage system was installed in Maafushi in 2007. The island has also decided to allocate land for households from the newly reclaimed area from the island. Therefore, water and sewerage systems will be required for the households.
