The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed existing harbour basin dredging operations as part of the ongoing renovation and expansion of the harbour in Hithaadhoo, Baa Atoll. MTCC stated that the breakwater and quay wall construction for the harbour is well underway.
MTCC stated that a full shipment of concrete blocks required for quay wall construction has been delivered to the site. The scope of the project includes 14,929cbm of dredging and excavation operations, 4,101cbm of entrance channel dredging operations, construction of 22m groyne, a 495m breakwater, a 90m revetment, a 350m quay wall repair, construction of a bridge, installation of 1,750sqm of harbor pavement, construction of a ramp and a concrete platform, and the installation of navigational aids and harbor lights. The value of the project is USD1.1 million.
The harbour renovation and expansion section of the project started in June. The existing harbour was expanded and repaired by adding 200ft as part of the project. The existing road canal has also been excavated and the section of the road canal has been levelled, a concrete pavement with geobags has been placed to prevent sand from falling into the harbour.
MTCC stated that the 75m jetty for smaller sea vessels is also nearing completion. The jetty along the length of the harbour is also benefiting the residents of the island.
