Laparoscopic surgeries will be conducted at Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital (ASMH) in Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.
Laparoscopy is a procedure that allows a surgeon to access the inside of the abdomen and pelvis without having to make large incisions in the skin. Such surgeries, which are performed using cameras and small instruments, reduce the pain and speed up recovery.
The government decided to develop ASMH to the tertiary level due to the large population on the island that relies on the hospital for health services. Following the development to the tertiary level, the hospital is now offering many services that were not available before. As such, the hospital is currently making preparations to conduct laparoscopic surgery for patients.
Speaking to PSM News, Manager at ASMH Shahid Mohamed said that the hospital has arranged to conduct Laparoscopic surgeries until May 5. He said that the surgeries will be conducted in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). In addition, he said work is being done with IGMH to provide permanent laparoscopic surgery at ASMH. The equipment needed to start the laparoscopic surgery service was installed on the island last year.
Along with Laparoscopic surgery services, advanced wound care is also scheduled to begin soon. Advanced wound care is a treatment for the rapid healing of long-standing wounds using modern equipment. A clinic for advanced wound care has also been set up at the hospital. In addition, the hospital is preparing to start special surgeries for women and orthopedic surgeries.
Developing health facilities in the atolls is one of the highest priorities of the administration. The initiative aims to reduce the reliance on the Greater Male’ Region and allow atoll residents to receive medical treatment and healthcare services near their residential islands.
