Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed that over 30 individuals are receiving treatment in hospitals after contracting COVID-19.
HPA stated that the number of COVID-19 cases has increased in the past month with 194 cases reported in the last week of April, of which 105 cases were in Male’, 42 were in inhabited islands, and 47 were in resorts and industrial zones. The total number of COVID-19 cases has now risen to 186,435.
Currently, 38 individuals are receiving treatment in hospitals and health professionals have expressed over the rise in COVID-19 cases in the Maldives. Senior Medical Officer at HPA Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq said the patients are not in serious condition but that they include pregnant women and children, who are considered high-risk.
HPA warned that the increase in COVID-19 cases could lead to the spread of more variants and that authorities are taking samples to determine which variants are present in the Maldives. HPA has advised the public to refrain from gathering outside and to wear masks. The agency also urged individuals to self-isolate at home if they show signs of illness.
