President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed that the number of land plots under the Binveriyaa housing scheme will be increased to 6,200. He made the remark at the the function to inaugurate the land reclamation project in Gulhifalhu.
Addressing the function, President Solih described the Gulhifalhu land reclamation project as a major development initiative with significant positive implications for the entire country, despite its location in the Greater Male’ Region. He said that the project will transform Male’ and that its most notable impact will be its positive effect on the housing situation in the region.
Additionally, President Solih said that the administration plans to allocate 2,000 housing plots in Gulhifalhu while reserving another 2,000 for the housing scheme in Giraavarufalhu. He also said that the Binveriya scheme includes allocating 2,200 plots in Hulhumale’, bringing the total number of land plots granted under the plan to 6,200. He further said that the administration is exploring ways to increase the availability of land for residential purposes. He highlighted that the Binveriya housing scheme is the most extensive housing initiative undertaken in the country to date and that it will have far-reaching positive implications. He also emphasised the potential economic benefits of relocating the Male’ Commercial Harbour and constructing an international port at Gulhifalhu.
Furthermore, President Solih revealed that the administration will begin issuing land plots to recipients of the Binveriya housing scheme in August after reviewing the preliminary list of beneficiaries and addressing any complaints or inquiries. He said that the administration intends to continue issuing land plots until all eligible beneficiaries have received one, per the list of recipients. He added that the administration's goal of a prosperous and safe Maldives for the people is the driving force behind every agreement signed, ground broken, and initiative begun.
In conclusion, President Solih said the residents of Male' have long been deprived of fundamental human rights, and acknowledged the challenges they have faced due to living in overcrowded conditions. He said the decision to allocate land plots after 40 years was made to alleviate congestion and improve living conditions. He also said that the bridge connecting Male’ City and Thilafushi will be built next year, after which the bridge will be extended to Giraavarufalhu.
