MMPRC holds workshop on coral conservation

The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has held a workshop on coral conservation efforts, titled Healing the Earth, for the participants of the Visit Maldives Storytellers’ Conference 2023. The workshop was led by Kate Sheridan, the resident marine biologist at Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort and Spa, where the session was held.

During the workshop, participants learned about coral conservation efforts and intricate details of the role of corals in creating habitats for marine life, nurturing the balance of marine ecosystems, and protecting shorelines from erosion. They also learned about the threats faced by corals, including bleaching, ocean acidification, and over-fishing.

Afterward, participants took part in a planting session, learning how to plant coral fragments on a frame and nurture them into healthy colonies. They also had the opportunity to snorkel in the house reef and explore the existing coral frames underwater, reinforcing their commitment to preserving these natural treasures.

MPPRC stated that the workshop achieved the objective of highlighting local sustainable practices, such as coral propagation and coral frame construction, and it gave the opportunity for participants to explore the profound interconnection between the natural environment and the prosperity of the Maldivian tourism industry. It noted that the industry's prosperity is intimately tied to the health of the marine environment and that participants were able to develop an appreciation for the beauty, and fragility, of the country’s marine ecosystem, inspiring them to take action for its protection.
