Maldives Customs Service has contracted Future Homes Private Limited for the construction of an office building in Maafaru, Noonu Atoll.
The agreement was signed by Commissioner General of Customs Abdulla Shareef and by Operations Manager at Future Homes Ali Abdulla. The signing ceremony was attended by Parliamentarian Ahmed Haroon and President of the Maafaru Island Council Mohamed Adnan and Customs officials. The company has been tasked with completing the project within 540 days at a cost of USD434,500. The scope of the project includes an office space and an accommodation block.
Speaking at the ceremony, Shareef said the work is an important part of the government's policy to decentralise and expand regional customs services in the atolls. He said that that the opening of Maafaru International Airport and the current difficulties in providing customs services in the region will provide solutions with the new office building. In addition, he said that the role of customs will be expanded and customs officers will get the opportunity to be further trained in the field.
Meanwhile, Parliamentarian Haroon said that the expansion of customs services in the airport will be a great convenience for travelers. In addition, he said that resorts to be developed in Noonu Atoll will be connected to the airport. As such, he said that the completion of the new office building will lead to further expansion of the airport, enhancing the accessibility of passenger and cargo services.
