Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has contracted the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to reclaim land to upgrade Kadhdhoo Airport to international standards. The agreement was signed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim and the Director General of the Planning Ministry Fathimath Shaana Farooq.
MTCC is tasked with conducting a land reclamation and shore protection project, as per the agreement. The scope of the project includes a sand search survey, reclamation operations of 56 hectares, and the construction of a 4,433m revetment.
MTCC is tasked with completing the project within 900 days at a cost of USD23 million. The land reclamation project will allow Kadhdhoo Airport to be upgraded to an international airport with the construction of a 2.4km runway, international passenger terminal, and other facilities.
Kadhdhoo Airport was opened in 1986 making it the third airport to be opened in the Maldives. The government has announced it is seeking to upgrade the domestic airport to international standards on a cross-subsidy basis.
