MTCC lays asphalt in 11 roads for Hoarafushi road development project

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has laid asphalt on 11 roads as part of the road development project in Hoarafushi, Haa Alifu Atoll.

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) is in the final phases of the project. Under the project, the company has laid asphalt on 5,303m of road. Currently, MTCC is adding asphalt to unpaved roads, placing speed breakers and traffic signs, and identifying spots for patching on existing paved roads. The initiative also encompasses creating a reliable drainage system and setting up street lights.

Member of the Hoarafushi Island Council Ahmed Raoof expressed that the roads in the island will be upgraded to contemporary standards, offering substantial relief to school children, the elderly, and all commuters. He added that the era of driving on subpar roads is now a thing of the past.

MTCC was awarded the project in January last year. As part of the project, 11 roads of Hoarafushi is being re-developed, including the six largest roads on the island. A total of 5.3km of roads is being developed with asphalt paving, speed breakers, street lights, signage, and a stormwater drainage system. The total value of the project is USD4.66 million.

Hoarafushi is one of the largest islands in the Maldives and has a population of 3,500 residents. A large land area spanning over 74 hectares is inhabited. Hoarafushi Island Council stated that the roads in the island are in poor condition, which causes damages to vehicles.
