Maldives economy will double by 2028: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the economy of the Maldives will double by 2028.

At a campaign event in Gaadhiffushi, Thaa Atoll, President Solih said that the previous governments ignored the development of small communities such as the residents of Gaadhiffushi. He, however, said that his administration has been developing and establishing essential services in the atolls since 2018. He said that the citizens greatly approve of the administration's efforts to develop small islands equitably in the past five years.

Additionally, President Solih highlighted the completed and ongoing development projects in Gaadhiffushi. He noted that the powerhouse and water and sewerage systems have been developed, while the development of the harbour has been contracted, and the process of providing the necessary school supplies is ongoing. He further pledged to reclaim land to solve the housing issue on the island and designate nearby Usfushi as a picnic island in his second term. He explained that a beach area would be developed on the reclaimed land and also vowed to develop an extension for the health centre. He added that he would develop a volleyball court and outdoor gym on the island.

Furthermore, President Solih said that his administration is making efforts to double the economy by building the necessary infrastructure across the country. He highlighted that developing airports, harbours, and the transport system will increase productivity and state revenue. He said that he makes pledges to develop the atolls as part of his administration's goal of building the economy and doubling the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to USD11 billion by 2028. He emphasised that the goal can only be reached if the administration is allowed to continue its development initiative.
