Contract signed to develop hospital in Kulhudhuffushi and Thinadhoo

Ministry of Health has contracted the construction of a tertiary hospital in Kulhudhuffushi in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, and Thinadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll to China National Electric Engineering Company Limited (CNEEC). The agreement was signed by Senior Executive at the Health Ministry Abdul Hannan Hussain and Vice President of CNEEC Jin Hui.

The health ministry stated that CNEEC is tasked to complete the construction of the hospital within 30 months at a cost of USD76 million. A 100- bed tertiary hospital is set to be established in Kulhudhuffushi and Thinadhoo, occupying a new designated area. The ministry further noted that the project is expected to progress swiftly, given CNEEC's ongoing involvement in projects within the Maldives.

Building tertiary hospitals in five regions of the Maldives is part of the government's pledge to decentralise healthcare services in the country and improve healthcare in the atolls. Among the designated islands for these advanced healthcare facilities, Kulhudhuffushi and Thinadhoo have been chosen due to their significant role as primary healthcare providers for a substantial population in the atolls. This strategy represents a significant step toward improving healthcare accessibility and quality across the country.
