Gov't contracts companies for development in six islands

Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has contracted companies to conduct development projects in six islands.

The projects awarded to contractors include the development of major roads in Thoddoo in Alifu Alifu Atoll and Vaadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, the development of the harbour in Utheemu in Haa Alifu Atoll, and Olhuvelifushi and Kurendhoo in Lhaviyani Atoll, as well as the shore protection project in Thimarafushi, Thaa Atoll.

Road Development Corporation (RDC) was awarded the contract for the road development project in Thoddoo and Vaadhoo. The project in Thoddoo consists of the paving of 2.5km of road and the installation of storm drainage systems and street lights. The project was contracted to RDC at a cost of USD5 million with a completion period of 730 days. The project in Vaadhoo consists of the paving of 3km of road and the installation of storm drainage systems and street lights. The project was awarded to RDC at a cost of USD6 million to be completed within 730 days. The agreement for both projects was signed by the Director General at the Planning Ministry Fathimath Shana Farooq and the General Manager of RDC Hassan Saeed.

Meanwhile, the Maldives Transporting and Contracting Company (MTCC) was awarded the contract for upgrading the channel breakwater of the harbour in Utheemu. The scope of the project includes 8,400cbm channel dredging operations, 50m breakwater, and the installation of lights. MTCC was awarded the project at a cost of USD401,000 to be completed within 180 days.

The harbour development project in Olhuvelifushi includes 7,534cbm maintenance dredging operations, 49,857cbm new harbour basin dredging operations, 14,160cbm channel dredging operations, 164m revetment, 172m breakwater, 156m sand-filled breakwater outer revetment, and a 156m sand-filled breakwater inner revetment, The project also includes the installation of a ramp, bridge, jetty, pavement, navigational and harbour lights. MTCC was awarded the project at a cost of USD4 million to be completed in 450 days.

The harbour development project in Kurendhoo includes 36,363cbm maintenance dredging operations, 63m revetment, 415m breakwater, as well as the installation of a concrete jetty. The project was awarded to MTCC at a cost of USD3 million to be completed within in 450 days. The agreement for the three projects was signed by the Director General at the Planning Ministry Fathimath Shana Farooq Chief Operating Officer (CEO) of MTCC Shahid Hussain Moosa.

The shore protection project in Thimarafushi was contracted to SAS e Construction Private Limited. The scope of the project includes a 280m revetment and a 260m breakwater. The project will solve the problem of erosion and flooding in the southeastern area of the island. The project was awarded at a cost of USD1 million to be completed within 240 days. The agreement was signed by the Director General at the Planning Ministry Fathimath Shana Farooq and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SAS e Construction Abdulla Sawad.
