The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed the land reclamation project in Bodufolhudhoo, Alifu Alifu Atoll.
The government awarded the land reclamation project to MTCC on August 25. The scope of the project includes the reclamation of 12 hectares of land and the construction of a 180m breakwater. The total value of the project is USD4.7 million.
Bodufolhudhoo Island Council has highlighted the significance of the project considering it the most ambitious endeavour the island has undertaken. The council aims to boost economic activities like tourism and establish income-generating resources for the island following the completion of the project. The council is also planning to develop residential flats, as the lack of available land for housing has been a major issue. With more than 150 residents seeking housing, the council believes that land reclamation holds the key to resolving these pressing issues. In addition to the housing issues, the council noted that the land shortage is a major obstacle for the development of local tourism
Bodufolhudhoo has a population of 800 residents. The unavailability of land for housing is one of the biggest issues facing the island since the 1990s.
