Road Development Corporation Limited (RDC) has temporarily halted the redevelopment of Ameenee Magu on the instructions of the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM).
Speaking to PSM News, Managing Director Moosa Ali Manik said that RDC was scheduled to begin work on the last two segments this month. He, however, said that ECM has instructed RDC to halt their work until the end of the presidential election to prevent congestion, as Ameenee Magu is one of the busiest roads in Male' City.
As such, Manik assured that work on the last two segments will commence as soon as the election is over. He said that RDC has already finished discussions with utility companies to coordinate properly during the work on the segments. He added that the segments will be completed within a month.
The redevelopment of Ameenee Magu is being carried out in 13 segments. The project involves paving the whole 1.7km length of Ameenee Magu with asphalt and installing a new stormwater drainage system. The project was contracted to RDC at a price of USD5.5 million.
Ameenee Magu is one of the busiest roads in Male’ City due to the high number of office buildings and schools in the area. It is also one of the few roads that run across the length of the capital city and is the main network for utility services. The road also connects the traffic to all areas of the city but has been in poor condition for years.
