Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan has stated that young workers are a valuable asset to the country. He made the remark at the graduation ceremony held at the Maldives Polytechnic.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Minister Hassan said that graduating not only benefits the students and their families but also their community and the entire country. He said that skilled young workers play a large role in developing the country, noting that studies around the world show that the greatest tool to eradicate poverty in a country is skilled workers.
Additionally, Minister Hassan said he was surprised to see the salary sheet of polytechnic employees, as they have worked for an unusually low salary for a long time. He, however, said the recent improvement in their salaries is a reward for their perseverance.
Also at the ceremony, Minister of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam said that every student should not be required to obtain a university degree after completing secondary education. He said that skilled workers are needed for the development of the country but are currently in short supply, adding that it should not be the norm for people to only accept a job where they work at an office desk.
A total of 535 students from 50 different programmes graduated from Maldives Polytechnic. They were presented with certificates and awards by Minister Hassan and Minister Aslam at the graduation ceremony.
