Male' Water and Sewerage Company Private Limited (MWSC) has completed the water supply and sewerage project in Feridhoo, Alifu Alifu Atoll.
MWSC began the water and sewerage project in 2021 and completed it with collaboration from the Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure and the State Electric Company (STELCO) after some delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Feridhoo Island Council stated that the networks will be connected to households in November.
Under the project, MWSC developed a 6.77km long water supply network, along with two reverse osmosis (RO) plants, three storage tanks and household connections to the main network. In addition, MWSC developed a 5.5km sewerage network in the island, along with a 1.7km pumping line, three pumping stations and one sea outfall. The project also includes installing household connections to the main sewerage network and placing junctions. The water and sewerage project in Feridhoo was carried out at a cost of USD 4.5 million.
The Feridhoo Island Council stated that the water and sewerage pipes were laid in the newly developed roads. The council highlighted that one of the biggest complaints from local tourism businesses is the polluted water in the island and that most households use oxygen pumps to remove the foul smell from the water. He, however, said that the new water supply network will solve the issues.
