The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has discussed avenues for extending financial assistance to ongoing projects in the Maldives. The discussions took place during a meeting between President of AIIB Jin Liqun and Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer on the sidelines of the Twenty-Eighth Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28).
In a post on X, Minister Zameer shared insights into infrastructure development projects earmarked for implementation in the Maldives during the meeting with President Liqun. The discussions encompassed ongoing projects in the most densely populated areas of the country, advancements in regional airports, and planned initiatives in the field of renewable energy. Both leaders also explored specific areas where AIIB could extend financial support to the Maldives.
Additionally, Minister Zameer provided President Liqun with a briefing on the expected completion of the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) by the 2024 tourist season. He underscored the positive impact that the project is anticipated to bring to the Maldivian tourism industry.
AIIB was established in 2015 with 52 member countries and has been actively involved in providing financial and technical assistance to numerous infrastructure development projects across the Asian region. Notably, the bank has expanded its membership to include 109 countries.
