President to allow IVF treatment to be covered under Aasandha

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to allow in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment to be covered under the national health insurance scheme, Aasandha.

Speaking at a press conference, President Muizzu said that the Cabinet has made the decision to amend the relevant rules and regulations to allow IVF treatment to be covered by Aasandha. He also said that the government will further develop the fertility centre at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and open a USD1.9 million fund for reproductive health. He added that private hospitals will also cover IVF treatment under Aasandha and that hospitals abroad that provide such services will be graded under Aasandha.

Additionally, President Muizzu said that he would improve the quality of services provided under Aasandha and allow citizens to test for chronic illnesses twice a year through Aasandha on the recommendation of doctors. He also said that he would prioritise building a healthy society by improving preventive health care in all parts of the country.

Furthermore, President Muizzu highlighted that Aasandha is a huge financial burden on the state and said he will improve and strengthen its management through a check and balance system. The government currently spends USD65 million a year on Aasandha.
