The government has made the decision to offer comprehensive coverage for 'endometriosis' and 'Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)' treatments under the government's universal healthcare insurance scheme, Aasandha. The decision was made following deliberations on a paper submitted by the Ministry of Social and Family Development to the Cabinet.
At a press conference, Under Secretary for Public Policy at the President's Office Mohamed Firuzul noted the high number of women who have sought treatment for such diseases, adding that their main challenge is not receiving full Aasandha coverage. As such, he said that providing full coverage for the treatment of these diseases is part of the government's decision to facilitate easier access to fertility treatment and in vitro fertilisation (IVF). He added that the government will also be raising public awareness about the health problems faced by women.
Responding to questions regarding how the decision would impact the budget, Firuzul said USD195 million will be spent on medical treatment this year. He also said that the public has always expressed concern over the lack of Aasandha coverage and that the President's intention is to expand coverage. He highlighted that the government plans to reduce the cost of Aasandha through improvements in its management. He added that efforts will be made to control the cost of the bulk procurement of medicine for treatment of endometriosis and PCOS.
While the Aasandha Scheme currently provides coverage for 'Endometriosis' and 'PCOS' treatments, this decision addresses the challenge of patients being denied coverage due to the diagnostic links of these conditions, including instances where infertility has been diagnosed. To facilitate the implementation of this decision, the Administration intends to conduct a sensitisation programme to raise awareness among healthcare professionals and further refine treatment protocols in government hospitals.
This initiative is a key component of the Administration's 'Hafuthaa 14' roadmap.
