Gov't aims comprehensive resolution for fisheries sector

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has emphasised the need to formulate a comprehensive solution that addresses various aspects of the fisheries sector. He made the statement while speaking at the function held to mark the 43rd Fishermen's Day at Dharubaaruge convention centre.

Speaking at the function, Minister Shiyam emphasised the existing challenges within the fisheries sector of the Maldives. He noted that a significant amount owed to fishermen for processed fish had not been paid yet. He said that USD9 million in payments have been made to fishermen to date, highlighting the need for a streamlined payment process.

Additionally, Minister Shiyam acknowledged the different aspects of the fisheries sector in the country and outlined upcoming initiatives. He also said that the fisheries ministry's revised mandate would lead to exploration in new areas, aiming for enhanced benefits.

The event also featured the presentation of 19 awards to deserving recipients for Fishermen's Day prizes. In addition, plaques were presented to distinguished individuals in the field of fisheries.
