PNC secures 12 seats uncontested prior to January by-elections

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has stated that the People's National Congress (PNC) secured 12 seats in 11 islands uncontested prior to the by-elections scheduled for January 13.

ECM had initially scheduled by-elections in 18 islands but received no candidacy forms for five of the islands. The electoral body stated that the 12 vacant seats in the Women's Development Committee (WDC) across 11 islands, along with the vacant seat in the Rakeedhoo Island Council in Vaavu Atoll, were secured as only one candidate contested. Out of the 13 seats secured uncontested in the by-elections, PNC secured 12, while an independent candidate secured the remaining seat.

ECM stated that only one of the by-elections scheduled for January 13 will take place, specifically the election to fill the vacant seat in the WDC of Mulah, Meemu Atoll. As such, two candidates are contesting for the seat.

ECM also announced that a by-election for four island councils will be held on January 27. The election will choose candidates for the vacant council seats in Rakeedhoo, Dharanboodhoo in Faafu Atoll, and Madavelli in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. In addition, a member will be elected for the vacant seat reserved for a woman in Fehendhoo Island Council, Baa Atoll.
