Committee approves salary increase for parliamentarians

The Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts has approved a salary increase of USD6,500 for parliamentarians, as well as sanctioning salary increases for various other government officials.

Parliamentarian Yaqoob Abdulla presented a proposal outlining the salary changes to the committee, with support from Parliamentarian Abdul Ghafoor Moosa. The proposal also included salary increases for the president, vice president, cabinet members, judges, independent institutions, mayors, and councilors.

Parliamentarians currently receive a salary of USD4,100 along with a committee allowance of USD1,300, totaling USD5,400. Following the approved increase, their new compensation will consist of a monthly salary of USD6,500 alongside a committee allowance of USD1,300.

The salary adjustment for parliamentarians is scheduled to take effect from the 20th Parliament to be elected next year. However, the committee has decided that if the proposed increase is passed by the current 19th Parliament, it will be applicable to the existing members.
