Councils were neglected by previous administrations: Gov't

Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, has highlighted the shortcomings of past administrations in fulfilling their responsibilities towards local councils. He made the remarks while speaking at the Kangathi Awards 2023 ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony aimed at acknowledging and commending the efforts of councils, Minister Adam Shareef highlighted a key concern expressed by councils since the government transition. He said that the concern revolves around insufficient attention to councils from previous administrations and the deteriorating state of council buildings.

Additionally, the minister highlighted administrative challenges identified through discussions with councils. He advocated for an increase of legal authority to facilitate the decentralisation of administrative areas, stressing the necessity to empower councils through legal reforms, accompanied by strengthened monitoring and accountability measures.

Furthermore, minister expressed confidence in the current administration led by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. He affirmed the administration's commitment to enhancing the financial prosperity of councils and envisioned a future where councils would be empowered, ensuring their economic well-being and an improved quality of public services.

During the ceremony, the minister extended gratitude to the employees of the Local Government Authority (LGA) for their role in strengthening the decentralisation system in collaboration with councils. Memorial plaques were also presented to honor the diverse contributions and multifaceted service of councils.
