President vows to end dominance of foreign companies in gov't projects

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has vowed to end the dominance of foreign companies over local counterparts in conducting government projects.

Speaking at the Builder Awards 2023, President Muizzu stressed that promoting Maldivian nationalism involves reclaiming control of local craftsmanship and industries. As such, he pledged to propose necessary revisions to laws and regulations after consultations with construction industry leaders, signaling a readiness to reconsider the existing point system if needed. He highlighted that foreign companies are needed to commence special projects but stressed that local companies should play the lead role in conducting government projects.

Additionally, President Muizzu urged stakeholders in the construction industry to play an important role in renovating and preserving heritage buildings for future generations. He also highlighted that the Cabinet has decided to implement a policy to exclusively employ Maldivians in three construction-related roles within two years. As such, the government will restrict employment of building inspectors, site supervisors, and surveyors solely to Maldivian nationals. He also said that the government has held discussions with stakeholders to provide training opportunities and provide employment exclusively to Maldivians in special sectors in the coming years.
