The Indian Ocean tsunami of December 26, 2004, was triggered by a massive undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The resulting series of tsunamis devastated several countries along the Indian Ocean coastline, including the Maldives.

The tsunami waves struck numerous islands in the Maldives, causing widespread destruction. It severely impacted the low-lying atolls and killed 82 people and left 26 missing. Over 15,000 people lost their homes, and many were forced to move away from their islands and live in shelters. The waves caused extensive damage to homes, resorts, and critical infrastructure.
