Discussions for immediate withdrawal of Indian troops underway: Gov't

The President's Office has stated that the administration is holding discussions for the immediate removal of Indian troops.

At a press conference, Chief Spokesperson at the President's Office Mohamed Shahyb said talks between the two countries are progressing at a fast pace for the withdrawal of Indian troops. He said the administration estimates that there are 89 Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives, based on the latest information.

Additionally, Spokesperson Shahyb said the administration is in the process of reviewing the agreements the previous government had made with the Indian government. He noted that the previous government had signed a large number of agreements with India, which were renewed at later dates. He said the agreements are being reviewed by a high-level technical committee comprising senior officials from the governments of India and the Maldives.

Furthermore, Spokesperson Shahyb said that certain clauses of the agreements will be altered if they are identified as potential threats to national security. He added that the new administration had decided not to renew the hydrography agreement after it was reviewed by the committee.
