Parliament's reputation tarnished after Cabinet rejection: Vice President

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has asserted that the Parliament's reputation was tarnished following the rejection of the government-appointed Cabinet ministers for the first time in its history. He made the remark at a PNC campaign event.

Referring to parliamentarians representing opposition MDP, Vice President Latheef said the Parliament adjourned without approving President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu Cabinet. He highlighted that no prior Parliament had taken such action against any government.

The Parliament went to recess after concluding the third session of the year without approving the Cabinet of the new administration. MDP, which has the majority in Parliament, has faced criticism from parliamentarians and the public due to the issue.

At the rally, Vice President Latheef expressed concern that allowing further opportunities for such actions would impede the development initiatives of the ruling coalition. He highlighted the importance of the upcoming Male' City mayoral election and said that the competition for the seat has increased because of the example set by President Muizzu when he was mayor.

As such, Vice President Latheef said that President Muizzu brought major changes to Male' City despite pressure from the then-government. He said the candidates running for mayor acknowledge his service and believe that his vision is imperative for the development of the city. He added that President Muizzu has begun major development initiatives in Male' City and he wants someone who will cooperate with him as mayor.
