Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has stated that the relocation process for Male' Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi will begin in the next three months.
Speaking to PSM News, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MPL Mohamed Wajeeh Ibrahim emphasised the significance of the government initiative. He highlighted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu initiated the relocation efforts from his first day in office.
Additionally, Wajeeh clarified that the current administration has opted for Thilafushi over Gulhifalhu, the previous government's chosen site for the commercial harbour relocation. He confirmed the completion of relevant designs and plans, expressing confidence that the project will be finalised within the next three months. He also said that the necessary land for the project has already been identified and a contractor has been selected to carry out the work.
Furthermore, Wajeeh addressed the existing challenge of limited space at the commercial harbour. He pointed out that all sea-bound cargo for the Maldives currently converges at Male' City. He emphasised that the relocation to Thilafushi would significantly reduce the time required to unload cargo ships from the current five to nine days to a more efficient two to three days.
